Un total de 17 extraordinarias figuras del baloncesto de 12 países diferentes van a ingresar al Salón de la Fama FIBA el próximo 12 de septiembre en Estambul (Turquía,) durante el Campeonato del Mundo de la FIBA de 2010, según ha anunciado la propia Federación Internacional de Baloncesto en el día de hoy.

Iconos nacionales como Oscar Schmidt (Brasil), Arvydas Sabonis (Lituania), Dino Meneghin (Italia) y Vlade Divac y Dragan Kićanović (ambos de Serbia) se encuentran entre los que van a formar parte de la ‘Clase de 2010′ del Salón de la Fama de la FIBA.

Dos de las mejores jugadoras de todos los tiempos, Cheryl Miller (Estados Unidos) y Natalia Zassoulskaya (Rusia), completan la lista de atletas.

El total de 14 medallas Olímpicas y 15 medallas en Campeonatos del Mundo de la FIBA que presentan conjuntamente subraya la enorme categoría de los siete jugadores y de los tres entrenadores que van a entrar a formar parte del Salón de la Fama de la FIBA.

Asimismo, los árbitros y los dirigentes seleccionados destacaron durante décadas entre los más brillantes del mundo y son todos ellos grandes figuras en sus respectivos campos de acción.

“La ‘Clase de 2010′ incluye estrellas, carácter e innumerables méritos para la promoción de nuestro deporte”, ha declarado el Presidente de la FIBA, Bob Elphinston.

La gala de ingreso de la ‘Clase de 2010′ del Salón de la Fama de la FIBA tendrá lugar el próximo 12 de septiembre en el Swissôtel de Estambul y durante una ceremonia que se celebrará ese mismo día sobre el propio parqué del Sinan Erdem Dome, sede de la Final del
Campeonato del Mundo de la FIBA. Todos los integrantes de la ‘Clase de 2010′ estarán presentes. El posterior encuentro con los medios de comunicación tendrá lugar en la tarde del 12 de septiembre.

Acerca del FIBA Hall of Fame (Salón de la Fama de la FIBA):

El objetivo primordial del FIBA Hall of Fame (Salón de la Fama de la FIBA) es el de reflejar la historia del baloncesto y de sus protagonistas. El criterio clave para ser elegido como miembro del Salón de la Fama de la Federación Internacional de Baloncesto (FIBA) recae en la consecución de hitos en el desarrollo y la dedicación al baloncesto a nivel internacional.

El FIBA Hall of Fame, edificio de cinco plantas de altura y 2.000 metros cuadrados, fue inaugurado oficialmente el 1 de marzo de 2007, coincidiendo con el 75º aniversario de la fundación de la Federación Internacional de Baloncesto. Construido con la ayuda del Ayuntamiento de Alcobendas y por iniciativa de Pedro Ferrándiz, el FIBA Hall of Fame es una extensión de la Fundación Pedro Ferrándiz.

El 1 de marzo de 2007, al margen de la inauguración oficial del edificio, se anunciaron los nombres de los primeros miembros elegidos, a título póstumo, al FIBA Hall of Fame. En dicha lista figuran insignes protagonistas de la historia del baloncesto como Krešimir Ćosić (jugador, Croacia), Alexander Gomelsky (entrenador, Rusia), Radivoj Korać (jugador, Serbia), Fernando Martín (jugador, España), Dražen Petrović (jugador, Croacia), Liliana Ronchetti (jugadora, Italia), entre otros muchos.

El 12 de septiembre de 2007 se celebró en Alcobendas la primera gala de ingreso al FIBA Hall of Fame. Dicha ‘Clase de 2007′ incluyó un total de 20 nuevos miembros, entre los cuales se encuentran mitos como Sergei Belov (jugador, Rusia), Nikos Galis (jugador, Grecia), Hortência Marcari (jugadora, Brasil), Bill Russell (jugador, EE.UU.), Uljana Semjonova (jugadora, Letonia) y Dean Smith (entrenador, EE.UU.).

El 22 de septiembre de 2009, la ‘Clase de 2009′ presentó un total de 11 nuevos miembros, entre los cuales destacan figuras como Jacky Chazalon (jugadora, Francia), Pedro Ferrándiz (entrenador, España), Pete Newell (entrenador, EE.UU.), Ubiratán Pereira (jugador, Brasil -a título póstumo-) y Oscar Robertson (jugador, EE.UU.).

El procedimiento para la nominación y elección al FIBA Hall of Fame es el siguiente:

Los elegidos al FIBA Hall of Fame están divididos en cuatro categorías: JUGADORES (deben llevar retirados de la competición internacional desde hace cinco años como mínimo), ENTRENADORES, OFICIALES TÉCNICOS (árbitros y comisarios) y DIRIGENTES.

Las nominaciones de candidaturas para elección al FIBA Hall of Fame pueden ser presentadas por las Federaciones Nacionales miembros de la FIBA, por las Comisiones de Zona de la FIBA, por los miembros del Buró Central y por los integrantes del Comité de Selección de la FIBA.

El Comité de Selección de la FIBA, compuesto por el Secretario General de la FIBA, Patrick Baumann, y por dos miembros del Buró Central de la FIBA, Jenaro Marchand (Puerto Rico) y Manfred Ströher (Alemania), se encarga de analizar cuidadosamente todas las propuestas recibidas y de someter una lista de candidatos al Comité de Honores de la FIBA.

El Comité de Honores de la FIBA está integrado por el Presidente de la FIBA, Bob Elphinston (Australia), por el Vicepresidente de la FIBA, George Vassilakopoulos (Grecia), y por el Secretario General Emérito de la FIBA, Borislav Stanković (Serbia). El Comité de Honores analiza entonces la lista de nominados procedente del Comité de Selección y toma una decisión final sobre los elegidos al Salón de la Fama de la FIBA.

A total of 17 outstanding basketball personalities from 12 different countries will be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame on 12th September during the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul (Turkey), the International Basketball Federation announced today.

National icons Oscar Schmidt (Brazil), Arvydas Sabonis (Lithuania), Dino Meneghin (Italy) and Vlade Divac and Dragan Kićanović (both from Serbia) are among the inductees for the 2010 Class of the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Two of the best female players of all time, Cheryl Miller (USA) and Natalia Zassoulskaya (Russia), complete the list of players.

A combined 14 Olympic medals and 15 FIBA World Championship medals underline the prominence of the seven players and three coaches inducted.

The selected referees and contributors were at the top of the game for decades and belong to the most decorated in their field.

“The 2010 Class has stardom, character and countless merits for the promotion of our game,” said FIBA President Bob Elphinston.

“The inductees were and still are brilliant on and off the court. We are very proud to host the 2010 ceremony in the presence of all these great women and men during the FIBA World Championship and give them the public platform they deserve.”

The enshrinement ceremony for the 2010 Class of the FIBA Hall of Fame will take place on 12th September at the Swissôtel in Istanbul and during an on-court presentation at the Final of the FIBA World Championship at the Sinan Erdem Dome on the same day. All inductees will be present. A media availability session will be organised in the afternoon of 12th September.

About the FIBA Hall of Fame:

The primary goal of the FIBA Hall of Fame is to reflect the history of the sport and its protagonists. The key criterion for selection into the FIBA Hall of Fame is outstanding achievement, at the international level, to the development and status of the sport of basketball.
The FIBA Hall of Fame, a five-floor building that covers 2,000 square meters, was officially inaugurated on 1st March 2007 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Built with the help of the city of Alcobendas (Madrid, Spain) and upon initiative of Pedro Ferrándiz, legendary coach of Real Madrid, the FIBA Hall of Fame is an extension of the Pedro Ferrándiz Foundation.

On 1st March 2007, in addition to the official inauguration of the building, the announcement of the initial posthumous inductees into the FIBA Hall of Fame was made. The procedure for nomination and election into the FIBA Hall of Fame is as follows:

Inductees into the FIBA Hall of Fame are divided into four categories: PLAYERS (they must have been retired from international competition for a minimum of five years), COACHES, TECHNICAL OFFICIALS (referees and commissioners) and CONTRIBUTORS.

Nominations for inductees into the FIBA Hall of Fame can be submitted by FIBA member national federations, FIBA Zone Commissions, Central Board members and FIBA Screening Committee members.

The FIBA Screening Committee, consisting of FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann and Central Board members Jenaro Marchand (Puerto Rico) and Manfred Ströher (Germany), after having carefully studied all the received nominations for inductees, submits a final list of candidates to the FIBA Honours Committee.

The FIBA Honours Committee, comprised of FIBA President, Bob Elphinston (Australia), FIBA Vice President, George Vassilakopoulos (Greece), and FIBA Secretary General Emeritus, Borislav Stanković (Serbia), then assesses the list of nominations provided by the Screening Committee and makes the final decisions regarding each intake into the FIBA Hall of Fame.
